Painters of Wallingford - IntroductionIntroductionDuring the Victoria period, Wallingford (Oxfordshire UK) was home to a number of painters who rose to national prominence in their won time, and who are becoming better known to the modern audience. Many of these painters sprung from two families: the Leslie family of Riverside house; and the Hayllar family of Castle Priory, Wallingford. George Dunlop Leslie (1835-1921) was the son of Charles Robert Leslie. He had a brother, Robert Leslie, and produced a son, Peter Leslie. James Hayllar (1829-1920) had five daughters and four sons. Four of his daughters went on to become artists in their own right. These were Jessica Hayllar, Edith Hayllar, Mary Hayllar and Kate Hayllar. Click on the names of the artists to find out more about them, and to see examples of their work.
